It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

I'm not a regular poster on Camera Critters but when we were out early this morning I spotted these critters. One of our local shopping areas, Jerry's, always decks the halls, trees, sidewalks, and even bird cages for Christmas. Here are a few examples.

Camera Critters-Doggone

It's been awhile since I have posted on Camera Critters. And I guess I am probably taking a few liberties here but I thought that this picture my daughter took of one of her twins at Halloween was just too priceless not to post here. Critters don't get much cuter than this.

Camera Critters-Pesky Raven

It's been awhile since I have posted on Camera Critters. When I was in Ireland, I took quite a few critter pictures, one of which was this rather pesky crow.

Camera Critters-A Man and His Dog

There is this great meme called Camera Critters. Everybody gets to post pictures of any critter they want be it a cat, a dog, an alligator, a bird or what have you. I would like to have you hop on over to Camera Critters. There you can either sign up for your own post for Camera Critters or see lots and lots of other great critter pics. But don't hop over there until you've checked out my Camera Critter for this week.

When you go to San Diego, one of the "must see" places is Balboa Park. Not only does it have many, many museums, flower gardens, places to sit and people watch but it also has lots of street performers. When we were there a couple of years ago, I saw this guy and his dog. He had the dog doing all kinds of tricks but this was the only picture I got of him.

I'm definitely not a spider person. I don't particularly like them. But there is something fascinating about them. Awhile back when we were down in the Everglades, we were on a path and I saw this spider and it's web. Huge web and a pretty hefty spider too. So here he--or she--is.

Camera Critters-My Shilo

Awhile back, I found this great meme called Camera Critters. I love the pictures and decided that with my wealth of critter pictures down here in SW Florida, I would join in and I have for several weeks now. I would like to have you hop on over to Camera Critters. There you can either sign up for your own post for Camera Critters or see lots and lots of other great critter pics. So, now that you've done that--here is my critter.

Three years ago this month, my beloved kitty, Shilo, had to be put to sleep because of cancer. I still miss her. She always seemed to know when I needed a "kitty kiss". I would pick her up and she would lick my nose. When she first entered my house and my life as a kitten, this was the first thing she did when I picked her up. I miss those kisses!

Camera Critters-Beach Birds

Awhile back, I found this great meme called Camera Critters. So, now that you've done that--here are my critters.

I love going to the beach. Normally I go looking for shells but once in awhile I actually do take time to notice the birds on the beach. We have all kinds down here. Now I will admit that when it comes to identifying some of the birds, I have to use a book and even then I'm not sure so forgive me if there are mistakes here.

Sanderling
Great Egret
Willet
I think this is a Ruddy Turnstone.
Ring Bill Gull
Laughing Gull
Herring Gull
Immature Herring Gull along with various gulls and terns. Black Skimmer
Royal Tern-Don't ya love his little crown?
And my favorite, the Brown Pelican.
Who couldn't love someone with eyes like that?

Camera Critters-Squirrels

Awhile back, I found this great meme called Camera Critters. I love the pictures and decided that with my wealth of critter pictures down here in SW Florida, I would join in and I have for several weeks now. So, now that you've done that--here is my critter for the day.

It is a very interesting fact that we have no squirrels on Sanibel. I know there are people who wholeheartedly dislike squirrels. I rather like them. In fact I have been a mother to many a baby squirrel at the wildlife hospital where I volunteer. How can you not look into that little face and smile? Awhile back I found the following picture online. I love this picture and it does show how a baby squirrel is fed. I did not take this picture! This is not me feeding a baby squirrel!!!

That being said--I did take the following pictures. These were taken at Corkscrew Swamp on two different occasions.

When you live in Florida, chances are whenever you see a pond or a lake, you will see an alligator. And yes, they do have a mouth full of teeth. And when they show those teeth, they almost--ALMOST--look like they are smiling. Here are a bunch of pictures I have taken of smiling alligators in the Everglades, here on Sanibel, and up in St. Augustine.

Camera Critters-Black Skimmer

Awhile back, I found this great meme called Camera Critters. I love the pictures and decided that with my wealth of critter pictures down here in SW Florida, I would join in and I have for several weeks now. Black Skimmers are very interesting birds. Their red and black beak is knifelike thin. The lower part is much longer than the upper part. The reason being is that they "skim" along the water with the bottom part of the beak in the water hoping to catch small fish. An interesting fact is that when they are born, the upper and lower parts of the beak are equal lengths. By the time they are fledging at 4 weeks, the lower part is already at least 1 cm longer.

I took this picture on the beach on Sanibel. They really are a beautiful bird and very interesting.

Camera Critters-Anhingha

Awhile back, I found this great meme called Camera Critters. I love the pictures and decided that with my wealth of critter pictures down here in SW Florida, I would join in and I have for several weeks now. I would like to have you hop on over to Camera Critters. There you can either sign up for your own post for Camera Critters or see lots and lots of other great critter pics. So, now that you've done that--here is my critter for the day.

Here on Sanibel, we have lots of water and shore birds. The Anhingha is one of them. The first time I saw one with it's wings spread, I thought it was hurt. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought this. The Anhingha has no oil in it's feathers so it has to to spread them out to dry so that they can fly. The Anhingha is also called a Snake Bird because when it dives and comes back up, it's very thin neck looks like a snake. We live on a creek and near a pond. Today I caught these shots of an Anhingha. This guy decided to go back in the water after spreading his wings.
