I Am My Family Part 2

I thought you might be interested in what the original pictures looked like which Rafael used as his reference. Top middle is Sarah Gitel Goldberg Ryten, mother of the other 4. Bottom left is Malka Ryten who became a Yiddish actress. Bottom right is Julius Ritten who immigrated to the US and was Mr. Snowbird's birth grandfather. Top right is Chaja Golda Ryten Precelman, Rafael's great grandmother. Top left is Menashe/Menasze Ryten who perished in the Holocaust together with his daughter Hannah, her husband and two sons.

Below are the original pictures not in the collage.

I Am My Family

This post probably belongs on my genealogy blog but I thought more people would see it here--so here it is!

My husband is adopted. He had amazing adoptive parents. I am a genealogy nut. My daughter wanted to know her roots and where she got her nose. Also, where did Mr. Snowbird get his ears. So the search began.

I had done extensive research on my family so decided to do Mr. Snowbird's adoptive family. Adoptive family went back to Lithuania and England. This was all well and good but didn't explain where Karen got her nose and he got his ears. Luckily he had a copy of his adoption history which gave his natural mother's full name, her parents names, her grandparent's names, places etc. So, tracing that part was easy. We received pictures of his birth mom and a half sister. We found out where Karen got her nose and Mr. Snowbird got his ears.

Not so easy when it came to the natural father. We had his first name, his sibling's first names, his parent's first names (you get the picture.) We knew they lived in Detroit and were Jewish. Still not an easy task. But, then we had a stroke of luck. I wrote to Michigan for his birth certificate which had his adoptive name on it but said he was born in Ohio not Michigan. So, I wrote to the state of Ohio and lo and behold got his real birth certificate and lo and behold it had his natural father's full name. From there everything fell into place. We corresponded with and met relatives he never knew he had. One relative was a second cousin by the name of Rafael Goldchain. I corresponded with him a couple of times but my daughter took up the challenge and pursued this side of the family even more than me--and in doing so, traded information with Rafael on the family.

While Karen and Rafael were corresponding, she discovered that he was working on a book of photographs. But not just any photographs. The book is a family album of photographs with a twist: Rafael is the only subject. After extensive research and planning, he transformed himself into some of his ancestors (and Mr. Snowbird's)and then took pictures of himself as that ancestor. The outcome was amazing. He also included parts of his sketchbook which he wrote for each character in his book. On the page he wrote about his great grandmother, (Mr. Snowbird's great aunt) he included my first letter to him. Also, in the acknowledgement page, he thanks my daughter. We were really surprised by this.

Anyway, with permission from Rafael, I am reprinting the pictures here of Rafael as some of Mr. Snowbird's ancestors. Enjoy.

Self-Portrait as Sarah Getl Ryten (nee Goldberg) b. Lublin, Poland, circa 1860 d. Poland, early 1940's.

Sarah was Mr. Snowbird's great grandmother and Rafael's great great grandmother. This was taken from a real portrait of Sarah of which I have a copy.

Self-Portrait as David Ryten. b. Ustilug, Ukraine, 1845 d. Poland, early 1900's.

David was the husband of Sarah above and Mr. Snowbird's great grandfather. There is no known picture of David so Rafael did considerable research on what he might have looked like.

Self-Portrait as Chaja Golda Precelman (nee Ryten) b. Poland, 1880's d. Poland, early 1940's.

This is Rafael's great grandmother and the sister of Mr. Snowbird's grandfather, Julius. This was taken from a real portrait of Chaja with her mother, Sarah.

Self-Portrait as Malka Ryten. b. Lublin, Poland 1884 d. Tel Aviv, Israel, 1974

This is a sister of Chaja and Julius. Malka was an actress in the Yiddish Theatre. I have a copy of the picture that Rafael used for his portrait. It is amazing how close he comes to looking like her.

Self-Portrait as Dona Aida Precelman Ryten de Goldchain. b. Warsaw, Poland, 1902 d. Southfield, Michigan, United States, 1986

Aida was Rafael's grandmother. She immigrated from Poland to South America in the 1920's with her husband and then moved to Chile in the 1930's. After the death of her husband, she moved back to Buenos Aires then to Israel where she remarried. After her second husband's death, she moved several more times finally moving to the US where she met and married Manuel "Manny" Ritten, her first cousin. They were in their 80's when they married. Manny was the brother of Mr. Snowbird's birth father, Don David Ritten.

So, there you have it. If you want to learn more about this book, all you have to do is google Rafael Goldchain or I Am My Family. It is really a fascinating book and one our family will treasure.

So Who are You Related To???

So, this post is probably more suited to my genealogy blog, Branches and Roots, but I thought it would be more fun to post it over here.

Yesterday, my son and daughter and I were sending emails back and forth much of the day. For some reason, the two of them started talking about the John Adams movie that was on TV. I found out years ago that John and I shared an ancestor. My 11th great grandfather and his great great grandfather was Henry Adams, the immigrant ancestor. This makes John my 4th cousin 9 times removed.

Ok, so before you get all shaky trying to figure out what makes a 4th cousin and why is he 9 times removed, I found this explanation on another blog, Olive Tree Genealogy.

"There is often confusion over the terminology of cousins removed versus 1st cousins, 2nd cousins, etc.
Example: First cousins 4x removed means that the two individuals are 4 generations apart.
Example: 4th cousins means the individuals are on the same generational line and share a common ancestor in one of their 3rd great grandparents.
* First cousins share common grandparents
* 2nd cousins share common great grandparents
* 3rd cousins share common g-g grandparents
and so on
* 1st cousins once removed means one of the individuals is the child of your first cousin (you are one generation apart)
* 1st cousins twice removed means one of the individuals is the grandchild of your first cousin( you are 2 generations apart)
and so on

OK, so do you have that all clear now? So, that means that John and I share common g.g.g. grandparents (I can't even figure that one out because Henry is his g.g.grandfather and my 11th great. Oh well, I'll take Family Tree Maker's word for it.) And we are 9 generations apart. (That I can accept.)

So, this got me thinking about who else I might be related to. I am a member of Ancestry.com which I use practically everyday of my life--they aren't making a whole lot of money off of my membership! Anyway, I have my ancestral line posted on there. And if you do--and if other people's lines are correct--which often they aren't--you can find out who else you might be related to. Wanna know who my cousins are? I thought you would never ask. Here goes.

There are two towns named after an ancestor. Parkersburg, Illinois was founded by a great grand uncle and was named for his father and my g.g.g.grandfather, James Parker.
Finneytown, Ohio (which is now part of Cincinnati) was founded and named by my 5th great grandfather, Ebenezer Ward Finney.

#1. Meriwether Lewis (of Lewis and Clark fame) is my 2nd cousin 6 times removed.
#2. Andrew Johnson (17th President of the US) is supposedly my 3rd cousin 4 times removed.
#3. Mark Twain is supposedly my 3rd cousin 4 times removed.
#4. Nancy Astor (1st woman to serve in British House of Commons) is supposedly my 6th cousin. Gee, not even a removed on this one! This means that she and I are both 6 generations away from our common ancestor.
#5. Sam Bass (the outlaw and train robber. Cool!) 4th cousin 5 times removed.
#6. Katherine Hepburn (I knew that theatre ran in our family!) 7th cousin.
#7. Elizabeth Kortright Monroe (wife of President James Monroe) is my 3rd cousin 8 times removed.
#8. Samuel Morse (inventor of the Morse Code) 4th cousin 6 times removed.
#9. Barbara Pierce Bush (yup G. Dubya's mom) 7th cousin 1 times removed.
#10 George Walker Bush (god help me!!) 7th cousin 2 times removed. (I wish it was a lot more removed!!)
#11. Howard Hughes (Wish I had been named in his will.) 7th cousin 1 times removed.
#12. Pretty Boy Floyd (Bank robber and murderer. What can I say? I didn't pick my relatives.) 8th cousin.
#13. Booker T. Washington (How about that folks?) 8th cousin.

There are a lot more but I am not too sure that the correct ancestry has been posted. But, it is fun just to see who you are related to one way or another. If you are interested in reading some of my other possible famous relatives go check out this post on my genealogy blog.

And So It Begins

We had thought that the contractor was busy until August--which was fine since we are leaving for San Diego on the 19th and won't be back home until the 30th. Then we are taking off a couple of days later for the weekend. (Highland Games in Detroit). But, he called yesterday and said he was starting tomorrow!!! He promised he would be done by Friday. I hope he has a BIG crew! So, I guess I will be trying to get ready to go on vacation with madness going on around me.

I appreciated everyone's comments on the post before this one offering up advice about what we should do. I didn't mention our family room which is also wallpapered. The paper is starting to come off so I think we need to address that too. Right now, we are going to do what I had mentioned before--living room, laundry room, bedrooms, trim etc. But, we are hoping we can get this guy back in August and attack the kitchen, family room and possibly get rid of the red carpet. Mariby had suggested that we re-finished our hardwood floors. Mr. Snowbird was very receptive to that idea. It would mean getting some rugs though. I go barefoot all the time and I'm not sure my tootsies will welcome a hard floor instead of fluffy carpeting.

I've also been on the computer practically 24 hours a day for the last 3 days. I have been putting my family trees on Ancestry.com. I have done my dad's line--which goes back forever, Mr. Snowbirds natural father's line, and his natural mother's line. Next I have to do his adoptive line as well as my mother's line. The last one will take forever as I swear I have practically gotten a couple of her lines back to Adam and Eve!!! It has taken a lot of time but I'm really enjoying doing it. You can post pictures and everything.

Anyway, hopefully I can post some pictures of our re-modeling and hopefully it won't be nearly as traumatic as the Florida Room remodel was. Wish us luck.

Go Check Out My Genealogy Blog

Ok, I know a lot of you could care less about genealogy and especially my genealogy but today's post on my genealogy blog, Branches and Roots, is about how dumb luck and gut instinct helped me in my research yesterday. If you are at all interested, hop on over.

Roots

Yup, that's me with my big brother, Bill

I am and have been for 40 years a genealogist. I'm addicted to finding my roots. It all started over 50 years ago when my Dad's cousin, Eliza, introduced me to my Brooks/Dye/Sayers ancestors. She gave me pictures. She gave me heirlooms. She gave me jewelry. And, she set in motion what would become a hobby, a passion, and a wonderful way to relate to history. Years later, soon after my dad died, I went to visit his brother and sister in law, my Uncle Earl and Aunt Geneva. Aunt Geneva had been tracing her genealogy and took me to the local library in San Angelo, Texas where they lived. I had very little to go on but found an article in a DAR magazine tracing the John Dye family back to the 1600's to a man named Laurens Duyts. This was my line. John Dye was my great great grandfather. And so it began.

My grandfather, my Aunt Maxine, my mother, and my grandmother.

I dragged Mr. Snowbird through more courthouses, libraries, and cemeteries than he cares to remember. I spent what seemed like a thousand dollars in dimes photocopying articles, books, court records, pictures etc. I traveled to Salt Lake City twice to their HUGE genealogy library. I wrote letter after letter after letter. I spent hours and hours and hours nearly going blind looking at old, faded, hard to read reels of census tapes. Now, mind you this was 40 years ago. Not too many personal computers then, right? No, hopping on line, plugging in a name, and getting all kinds of records and information. Nope, this all had to be done by hand--or on foot. I began to collect a massive amount of photocopies, letters, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, service records from the Civil War etc, etc, etc. This meant piles and piles of papers and row upon row of big brown envelopes and shelf after shelf of genealogy books.

Finally, we got a computer and I bought a genealogy program to finally keep track of what I had done and where I needed to go. I got in contact with the guy in Salt Lake City who had written this program and he asked me for input and eventually let me pilot his upgrades. How cool is that? His program finally became so outdated I had to move on to Family Tree Maker. Then Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com came into being and I bought everything they had to offer so I can now go on line and sit in front of my computer and find all that stuff I used to have to go to the library, or courthouse, or cemetery to find. Mind you, I still take these little trips periodically, just for old times sake.

What is really neat is because of this passion of mine, I was able to find my husband's birth family. He is adopted and I chose to trace his adopted line first. He then gave me some papers his adopted mom had given him and in there was his birth mother's full name and his birth father's first name plus their siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, country of birth etc. Wow! So I went to work. I was able to find a little on his birth mom but not having his birth dad's last name, not much luck there. Soooo--I wrote to Lansing, Michigan for his birth certificate. Back came his adopted certificate but on there it stated that he had been born in Ohio, not in Michigan as we thought. Soooo--I wrote to Columbus, Ohio asking just to take a peek at his birth certificate. In a week, back came his original birth certificate with both birth parent's full names. Wow!! I was off and running!! To make a long story short, we found he had an aunt and cousins in Israel, an aunt in Detroit, and a half sister in Indiana. We have met most of these people and are in contact with all of them. Talk about lucking out. His ancestors go back to Wales and Russia/Poland. That was really refreshing to be able to look in foreign countries for ancestors. You see, some of my ancestors met the first people to come over to Jamestown. No lie! Or some of my ancestors lived near Jamestown. Most of my families go way, way, way back in America.

Both of my kids have taken an interest in genealogy. Karen traced her husbands line in Austria, Yugoslavia, and Hungary. Dave has helped his kids with numerous reports for school by looking up some of our ancestors. Parkersburg, Illinois was named for my ggg grandfather. Finneytown, Ohio was named for another ggg grandfather. President John Adams and I share ancestors. His grandfather, Henry Adams, was my whatever grandfather (way to far back to even count). And remember, Laurens Duyts, who I mentioned earlier? I love this guy. Talk about your skeleton in the closet. Well, first of all, to pay for his passage over to New Amsterdam, he cleared a bunch of land for a man named Jonas Bronk. Sound familiar? The Bronx? But, that's not all. He then sold his wife into adultery. Nice huh? For that, he had his ear cut off and was banished from New Amsterdam by Peter Stuyvesant himself. Good old Laurens got banished to New Jersey of all places. :-) But, he didn't go alone. He took his wife's sister with him and married her. You gotta love this guy.

And I leave you with Uncle Delbert Brooks. He was my dad's brother. I guess Uncle Del was always kind of a loner. He took off for parts unknown and no one heard from him for years and years. My cousin had a career in the Navy and had to have a security check done. Apparently during this check, they found that good old Uncle Del had joined Pancho Villa and became one of his lieutenants. After that was done, he worked on the railroads for awhile then ended up in Utah. One day, he went to the post office to get his retirement check. The postmaster said it wasn't there. Well, he thought that the postmaster just wasn't giving it to him so--yup--he got a gun and shot up the post office. Thank goodness, no one was injured, but that was my Uncle Del.

Ok, I know this is long and boring and I could go on and on but I won't. But--if anyone out there would like me to do a little bit of online research on their family, let me know. I LOVE doing research and I've gone about as far as I'm able for now on mine.

OK, now I'm going to bore you with some family pictures. Hee, hee.

The infamous Uncle Delbert himself. Doesn't this look like someone who would ride with Pancho Villa?

My great grandfather, Nicholas Brooks, Jr. and his wife Eliza Rebecca Dye Brooks. Don't you love the fact that she is pregnant, probably with my grandfather? And you have to love the fact that his father, Nicholas Brooks, Sr. had 4 wives, God knows how many kids, had his last kid when he was 99 and lived to be 110? What a guy!!

I call this Beauty and the Beast. On the left is beautiful Lucinda Montgomery Roberts Muncey McGuire. She was my g.g.grandmother.On the right is the very plain (possibly even homely) Mary Eliza Preston Morgan, another g.g.grandmother. (I know, the picture says g.g.g.grandmother. I goofed!!)

Between them, they produced my great grandparents, Laura Belle Roberts and Calvin Douglas Morgan.

Is this not the most handsome guy you would ever hope to meet?? This was my dad's Uncle Ben Brooks. Gotta love those Brookses. They were all such handsome men!! At least my Daddy was!!Meet my dad, George Edwin Brooks. Handsome devil!!

And my beautiful mother.

And last but not least, I am also a descendant of this guy--Edwyn Sandys, Archbishop of York. Hey, you never know who you will find on your family tree if you go back far enough.
